Asthma occurs when the airways in the lungs become inflamed and constricted. When this happens the muscles of the bronchial walls tighten, and the airways produce extra mucus that blocks the airways. Typical signs and symptoms of asthma range from minor wheezing to life-threatening asthma attacks.

Patients that are suffering from asthma know how this chronic medical condition affects their ability to breath. It becomes almost impossible for these patients to have normal breathing patterns. These sudden attacks can occurring at any time. In asthma patients, the airways are very sensitive and may react to a number of different triggers such as smoke, pollens and infections leading to constriction and inflammation of the airways.

Individuals suffering from this condition learn that they can reduce their risks of asthma attacks by carefully monitoring their condition on a daily basis. The actual frequency of the attacks and their severity will determine what course of actions and treatment a patient should follow.

Asthma is treated with two types of medicines: long-term control and quick-relief medicines. Long-term control medicines help reduce airway inflammation and prevent asthma symptoms. Quick-relief, or “rescue,” medicines relieve asthma symptoms that may flare up.

During the preventive phase of this illness, the patient will use a Bronchodilator which provides immediate relief from any minor attack. Many asthma patients have found this to be effective. Patients that experience a more serious condition are sometimes prescribed a low dose glucocorticoids by their doctor.

There are many conditions that can impact an individual suffering from Asthma. Some researchers believe that atmospheric pollution can make the asthmatic condition worse. Some medications prescribed for asthma can help to prevent flare-ups. However they should be used very sparingly as they can produce serious side effects. You should always consult with your doctor before taking any medications or beginning any medical treatment.
